Saffron - Spices and Herbs

The most expensive spice in the world, saffron comes from the stigma of a violet crocus. Pervasively fragrant and intensely flavored, a single pinch of saffron can flavor an entire recipe.

Our Spice Islands® saffron threads come from Spain, home of the annual saffron festival. Deep orange-red in color, the threads are unbroken and dry (not oily). They have a musky, flowery aroma and an earthy warmth with a lingering bitterness.

Saffron is a favorite spice in paella, risotto and Scandinavian sweet breads.

Only three stigmas, or threads, are picked from each saffron flower. So it takes 75,000 flowers to produce one single pound of saffron.
